When not filming David spends his time restoring a 1852 Railway Station on the south coast as well as some classic cars. When he gets a chance he’s out on his 1938 Gaff Cutter sailing around Rye Bay.
Married to Fran Cooper who is also a Set Decorator and they have a son Tom who is making his way as a DOP.
What I have learned throughout the years is that it’s not all about drawings and colour palettes, you have to get into the characters in the script and in your head visualise their environment. Production Design is a collaboration with the Director and the DOP to agree on a look that overall provides a complimentary background to the artists in front of the lens. There are no rules in my book ,I like to take each project on it’s own merits.Theres nothing wrong with referencing other work but it’s nice to try and keep it unique as possible.
